Te Whare claims QRL Centre of the Year

Valynce Te Whare has continued a meteoric rise in rugby league after being named the best centre in the Hostplus Cup today.

Te Whare, who had never played rugby league before being scouted by the Dolphins late last year, was named the competition’s Centre of the Year at the Queensland Rugby League Awards in Brisbane.

The former Waikato Chiefs rugby union player has been a sensation since making his debut in the Hostplus Cup earlier this season, scoring 12 tries in 13 matches.

He has also scored a spot in the Dolphins’ inaugural NRL squad, and will begin pre-season training under Wayne Bennett in November.

Tomorrow an even bigger prize waits as Te Whare lines up in the Hostplus Cup Grand Final for the Redcliffe Dolphins.

He will have an advantage over his opponents, as Te Whare works as a groundsman on Moreton Daily Stadium – the venue for the Hostplus Cup decider.

The Dolphins will take on reigning premiers Norths Devils in the Grand Final, with kick-off at 3pm.
