Stone to retire after 2026 finals tilt

Dolphins’ cult hero and foundation player Ray Stone has announced he will call time on his rugby league career at the conclusion of the 2026 NRL season.

In his usual understated manner, Stone told teammates yesterday that persistent injuries had led to his decision to retire.

The 29-year-old holds a spot in history as the club’s second NRL signing - after Felise Kaufusi - as the Dolphins began building their inaugural squad ahead of the 2023 season.

Upon arrival at the club, Stone became a fan favourite through his toughness, relentless work rate and fearless approach to the game.

He has played an important role in helping shape the club through its first four seasons in the NRL, earning the respect of teammates, coaches and supporters along the way – all while forgoing praise or fanfare.

Despite consistent injury setbacks Stone has continued to bring his trademark energy and intensity every time he has taken the field, never shying away from the tough work in the middle.

However with the Dolphins having secured their historic first place in the NRL Finals, Stone will get to have one last shot at a premiership.

"There is no doubt that Ray has come to our club and entrenched himself as a real hard man and one of our fans' favourite players," said Dolphins’ chief executive Terry Reader.

"He will forever hold a place in our history as the second NRL player signed by the club, and he has returned that favour by playing every game in a tough and uncompromising manner.

"We will always be thankful to Ray for the effort he has put in for the Dolphins and wish him and his young family all the best for the future."

Fittingly, Stone will face his former team the Parramatta Eels at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night in his 109th NRL appearance.
