As part of the Club's ongoing Celebrating Connection and Community series, Dolphins players and coaching staff gathered for a meaningful cultural workshop centred on Māori identity, heritage and shared purpose.
The session began with a traditional feed generously provided by local business The Cuzzys Cafe, creating a welcoming environment and setting the tone for an afternoon focused on connection, storytelling and learning.
Leading the way were Kodi Nikorima, Jeremy Marshall-King and Zac Garton, who shared their pepeha – the Māori practice of introducing oneself by acknowledging the mountains, rivers, ancestors and communities that shape who they are. Their reflections offered teammates and staff a deeper understanding of the importance of identity and belonging within Māori culture.
The workshop was facilitated by Andre and Gaylene Ahipene of Auaha; Māori Cultural Services and Solutions, who guided the group through a series of interactive activities exploring the themes of whānau (family and kinship), shared identity and navigating life's journey both on and off the field.
Through discussions and personal reflection, players and staff were encouraged to consider the people, places and experiences that have shaped them, while recognising the value of understanding and respecting the stories of others.
The team also took part in haka (ceremonial performance), an experience that brought energy, unity and a deeper appreciation of its cultural significance. More than a performance, the haka provided an opportunity to strengthen connections within the group and celebrate the pride and traditions that continue to be passed down through generations.
"It was both educational and enjoyable," the Dolphins Wellbeing Team said.
"It's about understanding where each of us are from and the families and communities we represent. Opportunities like this help strengthen our connections and create a greater appreciation for the cultures that make up our Club."
The workshop forms part of the Dolphins' commitment to creating an inclusive environment where players and staff feel valued, supported and connected to one another. By embracing different cultures and experiences, the Club continues to strengthen the relationships that underpin performance and build a sense of belonging across the entire Dolphins family.
The Celebrating Connection and Community series continues to reflect the Club's commitment to fostering a culture of respect, connection and performance.
