Dolphins and OzHarvest join forces to tackle hunger

One third of the globe’s food produce is either lost or wasted each year, and the Dolphins have decided to do their part combatting this food crisis by partnering with OzHarvest, Australia’s foremost food rescue organisation.

Since 2004, OzHarvest have been on a national mission to stop food waste, feed people in need and protect the planet by campaigning the importance of second life food and piloting change at all levels of society.

Driven by the purpose to ‘nourish our country’, OzHarvest has become Australia’s leading food rescue organisation, saving over 250 tonnes of good food from over 2,400 food donors weekly and delivering it directly to over 1,500 charities that feed people in need.

Through these initiatives, OzHarvest vans, staff and volunteers have been able to deliver 320 million meals since 2004.

Volunteers are the core of all good work which OzHarvest can do, with over 3,000 volunteers helping OzHarvest in their bid to halve Australia’s food waste by 2030.

To do our part, Dolphins’ players and staff were onsite to volunteer at the Brisbane OzHarvest Kitchen on Friday, 10th of April. The team helped cook and pack meals using second life food to ensure it reaches those in need.

Around 1.3 billion tonnes of food is either lost or wasted yearly, yet one in nine people do not have enough food to eat, which is why the work OzHarvest do is so critically important.

If one quarter of the food currently lost or wasted could be saved, it would be enough to feed 870 million hungry people.

Fans will also be given the opportunity to help support OzHarvest, as they will be the official matchday charity partner when the Dolphins face the Cowboys at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday the 19th of July.

Those in attendance will be able to do their part by purchasing a ticket in the 50-50 Charity Raffle, with proceeds raised supporting OzHarvest to feed those in need.
