Gilbert ready to lead against former mentor

After an intense pre-season, newly named captain Tom Gilbert is confident that the Dolphins are well-prepared for the year ahead, starting with the Rabbitohs on Friday night.

"This time of the year you’ve done the work, and I think we have had some great additions to the squad," Gilbert said.

"We’ve had a nice smooth transition over from last year, so everything’s going well. I think everyone’s confident this time of year to get out there and play this weekend and we’re really excited for that."

Gilbert’s appointment as captain marks a significant moment for the 24-year-old lock, who is returning to the field after two injury-afflicted seasons.

However, the leadership role has not changed his mindset.

Gilbert: We're excited to head into Round 1

"I’m just looking forward to embracing this week. I’m really happy to be back playing with the squad, obviously leading the boys is gonna be a privilege come Friday night."

Despite South Sydney missing key players Cameron Murray and Latrell Mitchell, Gilbert refuses to underestimate the influence of their coach and former Dolphins coach, Wayne Bennett.

"We know what a wonderful job Wayne can do under pressure.

"No doubt they have a lot of depth in their squad that blokes can fill in and we'll have absolute respect in our preparation for the Rabbitohs this week."

Gilbert will lead the Dolphins out for the first time on Friday night against the Rabbitohs at Suncorp Stadium.
