Rugby League World Cup: Round 1 Wrap

The Dolphins made their mark on the international stage as the opening round of the 2026 Rugby League World Cup delivered standout performances, historic victories and plenty of tries.

The tournament kicked off at a sold-out Allianz Stadium, where Jack Bostock made a dream Kangaroos debut against New Zealand.

Bostock wasted no time making an impact, intercepting a pass and racing the length of the field to score his first try in the green and gold. The Dolphins winger continued to cause problems for the Kiwi defence, finishing with a remarkable hat-trick and earning Player of the Match honours.

On the opposite side, Dolphins winger Jamayne Isaako was flawless with the boot, converting all five of his attempts for New Zealand with teammates Jeremy Marshall-King and Kodi Nikorima making their presence felt.

Australia ultimately secured a thrilling 24-22 victory to open their World Cup campaign.

Attention then turned to CommBank Stadium, where Samoa took on France, with Dolphins stars Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Connelly Lemuelu and Francis Molo representing their nation.

Tabuai-Fidow was quick to make his presence felt, crossing for an early try while also recording a try assist, four tackle breaks and 169 running metres.

Molo added to the scoreboard in the 77th minute, powering his way over for his first-ever international try.

Saturday’s clash between England and Tonga in Perth delivered another memorable moment, with Tonga claiming their first-ever victory over England.

Coached by Dolphins Head Coach Kristian Woolf, Tonga featured Isaiya Katoa, who went head-to-head with Dolphins teammate Herbie Farnworth representing England.

The historic result marked a significant achievement for Woolf and his Tongan side as they opened their World Cup campaign.

Rounding out the opening round, Dolphins utility Kurt Donoghoe represented Fiji as they secured a victory to begin their tournament.

With Round 1 complete, the Dolphins’ international representatives will look to build on their performances as the World Cup continues.
