The Dolphins NRLQ 21s have come away from Townsville with a strong 34-16 win over the top-of-the-table Cowboys, securing their fourth win of the season.
Welcoming key players back into the side, the Dolphins started fast and controlled the opening half, heading into the sheds with an 18-0 lead.
John Fineanganofo opened the scoring in the third minute, darting over from dummy half, before Toby Batten broke through the defensive line from 30 metres out to score in the 13th minute and extend the advantage.
Baylen Donald added another in the 19th minute, giving the Dolphins full control early in the contest.
The visitors continued their momentum after half-time when Batten delivered a cut-out pass to Brooklyn Sabine, who crossed in the 44th minute to push the lead further ahead.
The Cowboys hit back in the 54th minute and again in quick succession in the 58th and 66th minutes to bring the home side back into the contest.
But the Dolphins steadied late, with LJ Nonu crossing in the 72nd minute before Fineanganofo sealed the result with his second try of the afternoon in the 78th minute.
The Dolphins’ performance was built on discipline and control, finishing the game with an outstanding 92 per cent completion rate, successfully completing 38 of their 41 sets compared to the Cowboys’ 78 per cent completion rate from 29 of 37 sets.
The visitors also enjoyed 53 per cent of possession and laid the platform through the middle with 764 post-contact metres. Their attack produced six line breaks, while a defensive effort that saw the side finish with an 86.5 per cent tackle efficiency helped shut down the competition leaders.
The 34-16 victory marks an important result for the Dolphins, knocking off the ladder leaders and building momentum heading into the second half of the season.
